Eric Jordan Drummond (b. 1992 in Ottawa, Ontario)
Eric began drawing at a very early age. Born to parents from Madeira, Portugal and Le Marche, Italy; he was constantly inspired by western art, specifically from the Italian Renaissance. Around the age of 9 he was copying various drawings of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci from the books he received from his Grandfather. He has since copied and researched their methods, striving to understand the way they saw nature and humanity. After graduating highschool, he studied art history at the university of Guelph, specializing in the Italian and Dutch art of the 15th and 16th Century and becoming quite fond of Celtic Illuminated manuscripts. He also was fascinated by the social-political contexts artists operated in and how that influenced the artists he admired, while also broadening the variety of artists he found inspiration from.
After spending time building a portfolio from painting in his basement on school nights, and working odd jobs part time, he traveled to Florence, Italy in 2016 to study classical and academic painting and drawing for three years. There he learned to draw and paint the figure from life, compose portraits and still life’s, using the traditional methods and practices developed by the old masters from which he was so inspired by as a child.
Not only fascinated by painting and drawing methods of the old masters, Eric also studied sculptures and anatomy to further understand form and movement in his figures. Eric believes that the research and poetry found in your subjects is limitless, and it is the responsibility of the artist to present his or her vision in the most beautiful manner possible, drawing from past and present influences.
After graduating he returned to Canada and is now part of The Arts Project’s Art Residency program in London, Ontario, where he now works and teaches.
Eric’s work has been awarded and featured by many international establishments including The Art Renewal Center, Sotheby’s, The Luxembourg Art Prize and the MEAM in Barcelona. He has also worked as a instructor of drawing in Italy and in Canada, and has exhibited internationally in Italy, Spain, The United States and Canada.
